Just like remote work and video meetings, video interviews are now part of the norm. Luckily, you still get the chance to make an unforgettable first impression online! What should you expect, and how can you prepare? Here are our best tips for nailing that video interview:
Pre-interview tech check
Nothing spoils the mood like a failing internet connection or a forgotten password. So, a few hours before, conduct a tech check:
- Teams, Zoom, Google Meet...? Confirm which platform the interview will be on. Install it in advance on your computer or smartphone and do a trial run with a friend or family member.
- Ensure a reliable internet connection and check your audio & video quality! You don't want a video freeze at an awkward moment. If your connection is weak in your usual spot, or if there's too much backlight, you still have time to relocate.
Zone in on your video interview
- Remove all distractions from your surroundings: friends, family, kids, pets... Also, turn off all notifications: email, texts, social media, software updates, and other pop-ups to keep your focus sharp.
- Choose a neutral background to minimize distractions.
Dress the Part for Your Online Interview
Just like an in-person interview, make sure you’re dressed smartly from head to toe! Leave the pajama pants and sweatpants tucked away for now.
Prepare Online and Offline
- Keep your resume and job description within reach. No printer? No worries. A separate screen window works just as well, if not better.
- It's okay to peek! Highlight key points and arguments you want to emphasize in a noticeable color or bold font. Prepare thoroughly with The 10 most common interview questions.
- Keep a pen and paper handy for note-taking during the conversation.
Personalize Your Video Chat
- Maintain eye contact with your interviewer. It’s vital to engage as if you were in the room with them. Smile and show your enthusiasm for the role!
- After the interview, consider sending a thank-you email to the employer. It's a great opportunity to reiterate your interest in the job.
